Watching the Insides of a Cell

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

How to take pictures of what is going on inside a cell?

Researchers at MIT’s George R. Harrison Spectroscopy Lab have detected tiny twitches and vibrations in the membranes of individual cells and neurons by using a powerful and noninvasive imaging technique.

a laser beam passed through a sample is compared with a reference beam of similar wavelength that is not passed through the cell

neat. Can’t see something? Compare it’s affects to something you do know.

HP Openview sucks

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

OK, that’s a little harsh, but it could be much, MUCH better.

I checked out OpenNMS more then once, but  it’s the kind of thing that is hard to get into unless you are being paid to do it. I don’t need a NMS at home… (need always being subjective).

Tarus Balog of OpenNMS was on the latest FLOSS Weekly podcast and it might be the kind of discussion regarding NMS requirements, challenges and design that could convince a manager to try out.

mod_proxy for port redirection

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

I set up Ajaxterm and Webmin to redirect through Apache because sometimes all you have is port 80…

Once mod_proxy is installed and enabled, it’s pretty easy:

ProxyRequests Off
ProxyPass /webmin/ http://localhost:10000/
ProxyPassReverse /webmin/ http://localhost:10000/
ProxyPass /ajaxterm/ http://localhost:8022/
ProxyPassReverse /ajaxterm/ http://localhost:8022/

So, the links are…

Ajaxterm: http://slice.yooser.org/ajaxterm/

Webmin: http://slice.yooser.org/webmin/

Webmin requires some additional configuration, nicely documented here.

It works pretty good, except Webmin isn’t rewriting the top menus with the ‘/webmin/’ prefix. I might have to get on the mailing list to figure out what is wrong. I tried searching the Sourceforge list archives, but their searches still stink.

Red Wine Improves Health of Obese Mice

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Some good news for the day!

But if you just stick with moderate amounts of alcohol, you will be protected against heart disease to some degree.

The funny part was I was drinking red wine while listening to the podcast.

New car stereo

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

Finally got my new stereo (Kenwood Excelon KDC-X590) and installed it.

I ordered it from Crutchfield, and they sent everything I needed to install the stereo myself and I think it looks pretty nice!

New stereo
The reason I got this model is because it supports USB mass storage, so you can plug in a thumb drive or a USB hard drive and play it from there. There is also adapters available for an AUX out or an iPod connector. The iPod connector was free(!) so even though I don’t have an iPod yet, i may be getting one Real Soon Now.
The only problem with the installtion is the USB connector I stuck in there…

Car stereo USB
Any ideas how I could install that a little better? All I did was roto-zip a semi-square hole and hot glue the cable in there

By the way, if you buy something from Crutchfield and use my referal code ‘pb88i-zfej1-qg04b’ I get $20!
