DC/DC Converter Breakout - Ding'n'Dent
Replacement: BOB-09370. These were the result of a manufacturing screw up and so we had a limited quantity, but you can still get the standard version. This page is for reference only.

Description: This is a breakout board for our non-isolated, 6A DC-to-DC Converter Module. The module can convert any DC voltage between 4.5-14VDC to a selectable voltage between 0.59 and 5.5VDC.

To set the output voltage to the desired level, a resistor must be added between the Trim and GND pins. For example, to set the module to output 5V use a 1.34kΩ resistor, or to get 3.3V use a 2.182kΩ. See table 1 in the module's datasheet for more resistor values.

The ON/OFF pin on the board can be pulled high to turn the converter module on and low to turn it off.

Board comes as shown, with all components (aside from the trim resistor) populated. Access to all pins of the converter module is provided by two, 0.1"pitch headers.

It's something often ignored unless it's annoying, harnessed for sport or energy, the cause of great damage, or sometimes used for fun. LilyPad Vibe Board
Description: Apply 5V and be shaken by this small, but powerful vibration motor. Works great as an physical indicator without notifying anyone but the wearer. This version uses a surface mount motor which is less likely to be damaged during use.

LilyPad is a wearable technology developed by Leah Buechley and cooperatively designed by Leah and SparkFun. Each LilyPad was creatively designed to have large connecting pads to allow them to be sewn into clothing. Various input, output, power, and sensor boards are available. They're even washable!

Speaker - PCB Mount
Description: This through-hole speaker is great for projects where you need something that sounds better than a piezo buzzer but don't have room for a full-blown speaker. This 30mm diameter speaker is encased in plastic and will handle about 100mW of power.

Spark Gap Igniter - 4.8V
Description: These transformers are capable of creating spark gaps up to about half-an-inch. They work really well as an ignition source for things like potato cannons, they also make the official sound of the mad scientist. The sparks that are generated sound a lot like a taser and you should take that sound as a warning to take extreme care when the unit is powered.

To throw sparks, simply secure the blue and grey wires to electrodes spaced no more than half-an-inch apart and connect the red and white leads to a 5V source. Be warned, these transformers draw about 3A so your power supply will need to be somewhat robust.

Note: Please do not use these to shock people or animals. Seriously, that isn't cool. Actually, be extremely careful with these as they can seriously hurt you. If you don't fully understand high voltage, just live vicariously through the video.

Daily Life: May 2012

Thousands of images are supplied by multiple wire services to newspapers across the country each day. Many of those images depict ordinary scenes of life in different countries around the world. There are three picture editors that contribute to the Big Picture blog, each of them seeing the world in a little bit of a different way. Their backgrounds, their experiences, their interests - all very disparate. Each of them given the same resources (the visual wire) to edit from, each choosing very different ways to tell a story.
